Dentistry continues to improve over time, but there are still more traditional, tried-and-true ways of addressing common dental concerns. At Summit Dental of La Mesa, we find that a conventional option for teeth replacement, called the dental bridge, continues to be a reliable and effective way of restoring the function and beauty of the smile.

What is a dental bridge?

A dental bridge is a dental appliance that is used to replace missing teeth. These custom-made restorations are barely noticeable when they are placed in the smile when they are created by a trained provider and made to match the existing teeth. This seamless integration is the goal of our team at Summit Dental of La Mesa. The types of dental bridges available in our practice will vary depending on the patient’s unique needs.

How many teeth can a dental bridge replace?

Dental bridges are best utilized when replacing one or more teeth in a row. False teeth known as pontics are fused, together with dental crowns on each side. The dental bridge uses the surrounding, adjacent teeth to hold the crowns, therefore holding the pontics along the gumline as needed to restore the appearance and function of the dental arch.

What alternatives are available?

There are other ways in which patients can replace missing teeth, including partial dentures, full dentures, and dental implants. However, many find that dental bridges are a versatile option for them and can allow them a long-term solution for missing teeth while staying affordable. In fact, many patients will find that dental bridges are covered in part by their dental insurance plans, reducing overall out-of-pocket expenses. Patients need to ask a lot of questions about the options available to them for replacing teeth to choose the one most appropriate for their situation.
